Before their marriage, Iris and Ken would go out cycling on their tandem, as far north as Birmingham and as far south as the Isle of Wight. Iris told me that on the Isle of Wight they came to a sign at the top of the hill that said the hill was dangerous for cyclists, so she forced Ken to dismount. He was peeved as they’d cycled down worse hills. But Iris was relieved – Ken’s cycling was rather erratic, and because he always rode in front she was at his mercy.
